Power System Model Optimisation and Validation Workflow

Overview

Grid connection studies are critical for ensuring that power system models comply with required performance standards and accurately represent real-world systems under both steady-state and disturbed conditions. The accuracy of these models is vital for understanding system behavior during various events and for designing effective control strategies. Conversely, inaccurate models can result in suboptimal control designs, potentially leading to severe system outages.

This webinar presents a comprehensive validation workflow for renewable energy systems, leveraging the replay of field data. The workflow incorporates automated parameter tuning to produce a digital twin that closely emulates the actual system's response. This approach enables the optimisation and validation of power system models, supporting AEMO-recommended R0, R1, and R2 validation checks. Attendees will gain insights into best practices for model validation, ensuring robust and reliable integration of renewable energy into the grid.

Highlights

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Import baseline data in MATLAB. This could include field data from PMUs or the desired system response data to comply with regulatory standards.
  • Choose system parameters to fine-tune / optimise to achieve desired performance.
  • Perform automated parameter tuning / optimisation and update power system model.

About the Presenter

Dr Muhammad Ali is an Application Engineer at MathWorks and works closely with Simulink and Simscape customers to understand their business objectives and ensure that they are getting the most value out of our products and services. Ali has a background in renewable energy integration, microgrids, battery management systems and retrofitting existing aircraft into electric. He did his PhD from UNSW Australia where he got the opportunity to work on dispatchable inverter control techniques for microgrids, and testing off-the-shelf PV inverters while working (in partnership with AEMO) on an ARENA funded project.
