Is Real time workshop toolbox necessary for running simulink in external mode?

I am using matlab 2012b. I need to run simulink in external mode. However it gets stuck in the 'Initialising' stage. How to tackle this issue?

"I need to run simulink in external mode". Why? If you explain a little why you need external mode, it's easier to suggest what to do. External mode means using Simulink without the simulation engine, i.e., some other "external" program does the simulation. And yes, usually this external program comes from using Simulink Real Time (in older versions Real Time Workshop) for compiling Simulink models into something executable ...

With the newest versions of MATLAB, external mode calls for Simulink Desktop Real Time. That is a new product that merges the older Simulink Real Time with xPC Target. With your R2012b you would need Simulink Real Time for external mode, if I have dug up and understood the previous documentation properly.
I do not know anything about initialization time expectations for the product.
