How to simulate a computer network to choose the cluster head?

I have to simulate the the functioning of a sensor network, where a group of sensors are part of single network. And one of them is chosen as the cluster head(CH), so when any sensor wants to send data, it sends data to the CH first and the CH takes care of routing it out to destination.

The problem is, since the CH is accessed for message transmission by every sensor, it runs out of battery soon. So I want to show that we can use ring topology, where in the node with the token acts as the CH and thus no particular node runs out of battery.

New to matlab, any help or just guiding the direction is appreciated.
