How can i update R2018a to R2019a ?

MATLAB cannot be updated between releases: you can only install additional new releases (provided you have access to them).

If you are authorized to install MATLAB R2019a then you can download the installer from https://www.mathworks.com/downloads/web_downloads/download_release?release=R2019a

Do i have to delete the current instance of MATLAB? If so, how would I do that?

You would only have to delete the current MATLAB if you would run out of disk space to have both versions.

If you have the disk space and the licenses to do so, I would advise leaving both versions installed just in case some of your code that runs fine in R2018a doesn't run properly in R2019a. It will be very hard to debug the problem if you don't have both versions installed.
