I want my image processing function to read only a portion of a video for motion-based object detection. How do I create a mask for the remainder of the video so that I can cut down on processing time?

Hello,
I am modifying the MotionBasedMultipleObjectTrackingExample.m script to get a count of the number of boats entering and leaving the video. Unfortunately there is a lot of movement on the shore of the video that seems to be slowing down the function because it identifies 300+ moving objects when really I just want to capture the boat traffic in the top 2/3 of the camera's field of view. Is there a way to create some sort of mask which will allow the function to only read the portion of the video that I want it to read?
Thank you for the help!
