Extract substring in TLC file.

I am wanting to extract the first 16 characters from the string CompiledModel.Name, would anyone be able to advise me on how to do this.
I have tried variations of CompiledModel.Name[1:16] but to no avail.
The name is 17 characters long at the moment so I know it is not a size issue.
