importGeometry problems: two facets share edge

I seem to get this when trying to import stl files for use in PDE toolbox: Matlab Failed to create geometry. The stl file is invalid, more than two facets share an edge.
Is it common for stl files to be corrupt and if so, is there a way to fix them? If not, is there a way to convert face-vertices to nodes and elements? Thanks

try using stlread.m command in matlab to convert stl file to faces and vertices. Good luck!
