I am a newbie...I wanted to know whether we need to covert signal/data from parallel to serial before passing through the channel

The answer to the question is phrased is "No", especially if the channel mentioned is The English Channel.
If you have a specific kind of data communications channel in mind, then possibly you need to convert from parallel to serial before transmission through the channel, but that is going to depend upon whether the signal is already parallel and upon the characteristics of the channel.
