what is the idea behind the comparison tool in MATLAB? how it operates and compares?

Comparison Tool is just a one click tool in MATLAB and gives a result immediately. i just to know how MATLAB does it. Is it comparing by letter or by line?

For text files, the comparison is line by line unless the option has been passed in to ignore differences in spacing.
