I had 2 Simulink models open when MATLAB froze up. I used the TASK MGR to shut down MATLAB since it indicated MATLAB "is not responding". I opened the SIMULINK files on the specified path & my work for the day is not there. Does MATLAB save backup files at some temporary path as a contingency to crashing? If so where?

If you set your Simulink ‘Autosave’ preferences, a recent version should still be available. You may have to experiment to find the backup files. I haven’t encountered that problem, so I never had to recover an autosaved model.
The appropriate ‘Preferences’ section:

That works. They will be autosaved again,. It might also be best to create duplicates with slightly different filenames just to be sure.
