Correct. No existing version of MATLAB will recognize a compiler version newer than the date the MATLAB version was released.

C++ 2005 Express is supported by MATLAB R2008b for 32 bit compilation.

However, C++ 2005 Express is not supported by MATLAB R2008b for 64 bit compilation: the Professional version is required instead.
