You might not be using US keyboard layout. About keyboard layouts click here. Try either of these if using windows

usually this happens when we change the layout of keyboard. After changing layout then we don't get the character which are shown in keyboard. If it is not keyboard layout problem then I have no clue about this.
For testing your type Shift 2, if it is @ then your using US standard keyboard layout.

Are you using any language other then English ? Like Urdu, Arabic or Chinese ?
To make sure, type each character on keyboard and see which show strange characters, as you get -° for =.

What are your Regional Settings set to? Try setting them to US English and trying with that.

Please post more details: Does the problem concern only Matlab, or does the wrong character appear in a text editor also? If it concerns Matlab only, do you use the Java version shipped with Matlab or did you change it? Which operating system are you using? Does the problem concern the keyboard or the displayed font - check this by "disp(char(61))"?

If the problem concerns the font only, go to the preferences menu and change the font in the section with the same name.

Please, Mohamed Ali, post what you have done and explain what has happened. There is no chance to guess, what exactly does not work. Are you not able to find the preferences or the font section? Which font was defined before and which new font did you try?
What's the reply to "get(0, 'Language')" in Matlab's command window?
BTW, is there any difference between the character you call "half equality" and the minus character? Perhaps this is visible only, if you increase the font size.

I'm convinced this can be solved by fixing the preferences of Matlab. If you answer Walter's and my questions for clarifications more fluently, a solution would be likely.
I'd try to rebuild the preferences file at first, then re-install 2010b.
