modal decomposition using canon

Could someone tell me how the canon function works, or what exactly it is trying to do? I opened it up, and all it said was that the function canon uses the command canon.

I wondered because I had a system already in modal form, and when I transformed it using the canon function modal option, it transformed it into another modal form, not the same as I started with. Why does it do this?

the canon function uses the bdschur command, which performs a Schur factorization.
