How can I add some icons to a matlab map

I am creating some detailed maps using the Mapping Toolbox. I would like to add a very limited number of icons to the map to label some interstate highways and perhaps major stateroads. I know that Matlab does not have a simple way to do this. I think a path foward would be to created so small jpeg files with the desired icons an then add these to the map axes in some fashion. Has anyone tried to do this? Any suggestions
