How does MSB affect the compression ratio of an image?

I would like to ask if there is a way the Most Significant Bit(MSB) in DCT compression affects the quality of the image or the image compression? Also, how is the MSB related to bits per pixel(bpp) during DCT image compression. Thanks in advance
