Does it happen even if you try to save something very simple like a scalar value?

Also, does the error occur only when saving to a particular file? For example, try:
xlswrite('test.xlsx', 1)

Can you also tell us:
1. Version of MATLAB, and whether its 32-bit or 64-bit
2. Version of Office, and whether (in the case of 2010) its 64-bit
3. Version of Windows (XP, Vista, 7), and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit

You should put the path where you want to write the Excel file, something like that: xlswrite('C:\Users\KARLI\Desktop\karla.xls', a); Usually Works in Desktop

Does the name have a "/" in it or other special chars? I can generate the same error you get if I try that.

I found the bug..
The bug was in my code i was changing the file path. I mean asking it to save the file in a nonexistent location. Thanks for the answers though.

I had a similar error.
My bug was that the name was too long.
