Contests

STEM Showcase Contest

How to participate

Showcase a math, science, or engineering concept through an interactive MATLAB experience.

Details:

  • Participants submit either a MATLAB App, Live Script, or a combination of the two.
  • The submission must teach, explain, or help users explore a STEM concept.
  • The submission must be submitted to File Exchange and include a tag: ‘25yrcontest’.

Timeframe

This contest runs for 4 weeks. It begins on October 5th, 2026 at 00:00:00 am Eastern Time and ends on November 1st, 2026, at 11:59:59 pm Eastern Time.

Judging and Winner Selection

After the submission period closes, eligible submissions will be reviewed by a panel of MathWorks judges. Each eligible submission will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  1. Educational Value

How effectively the submission teaches, explains, demonstrates, or enables exploration of a mathematics, science, or engineering concept. Judges will consider whether the learning objective is clear and whether the submission helps users understand the concept.

  2. Interaction and Exploration

How effectively the MATLAB App, Live Script, or combination of the two enables users to interact with the content, vary relevant inputs, examine results, or otherwise explore the STEM concept.

  3. Visualization and Presentation

The clarity, appropriateness, and effectiveness of the visual presentation. Judges will consider whether figures, plots, animations, controls, text, and other presentation elements help communicate the concept.

  4. Technical Quality and Usability

Whether the submission functions as described and provides a clear and usable experience. Judges may consider organization, instructions, reliability, and ease of use.

  5. Creativity

The originality and inventiveness of the concept, teaching approach, interaction design, or use of MATLAB.

A submission may be considered in only one STEM domain. If a submission could reasonably fit within more than one domain, MathWorks will place it in the domain that MathWorks determines is the best fit based on the submission’s primary subject matter.

Prizes

  1. STEM Domain Awards

MathWorks judges will pick up to 3 winners from each of the following domains in accordance with the Judging and Winner Selection criteria above:

    • Mathematics
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Life Sciences
    • Earth & Climate Science
    • AI & Data Science
    • Engineering

Each winner will receive a $50 Amazon gift card. If fewer than three eligible submissions are received in a domain, or if the judges determine that fewer than three submissions sufficiently satisfy the judging criteria, MathWorks may select fewer than three winners in that domain.

  2. Weekly prizes

    • Each week, MathWorks will give out 5 MathWorks T-shirts or socks to authors who submit files.
    • Each week, MathWorks will give out 5 MathWorks T-shirts or socks to participants who comment on or review those submissions.
  3. Virtual badges

Participants who submit a submission that meets contest rules will earn a STEM Showcase badge.

This contest runs for 4 weeks. It begins on November 2nd, 2026 at 00:00:00 am EST and ends on November 29th, 2026 at 11:59:59 pm EST.

Judging and Winner Selection

After the submission period closes, eligible submissions will be reviewed by a panel of MathWorks judges.

  1. To be considered for a Grand Prize, a participant must submit at least one eligible game and create at least one eligible Tips & Tricks post in the MATLAB Central Discussions area during the contest period.

Each participant considered for a Grand Prize will be evaluated using the following criteria:

    • Game Creativity
The originality and inventiveness of the game concept, mechanics, visual design, theme, or use of the one-button constraint.

    • Gameplay and Use of the One-button Constraint
How effectively the game creates a clear, engaging, and playable experience using only one button as the gameplay control.

    • Technical Execution
How reliably the game operates and how effectively MATLAB is used to implement the game. Judges may consider functionality, code organization, responsiveness, and overall execution.

    • Tips & Tricks Post Quality
The clarity, usefulness, accuracy, and educational value of the participant’s eligible Tips & Tricks post or posts. Judges will consider whether the content helps other community members understand the participant’s approach, learn a MATLAB technique, or create and improve their own games.

  2. To be considered for a Most Played Award, a participant must submit at least one eligible game and create at least one eligible Tips & Tricks post in the MATLAB Central Discussions area during the contest period.

    For purposes of this award:

    • If an author submits more than one game, only that author’s single most-played eligible game will be used to determine the author’s leaderboard position.
    • If two or more eligible authors have the same number of recorded plays, the author whose qualifying game with more votes will receive the higher ranking.
    • MathWorks may exclude plays that it determines resulted from automated activity, manipulation, technical errors, or other activity inconsistent with fair participation.
