Live Script that simulates imaging using a pinhole camera model.
This simple Live Script simulates camera operation by transforming points in world coordinates to camera sensor image coordinates using a pinhole camera model. The mathematics of image formation with a pinhole camera is introduced. Virtual camera parameters are chosen to approximate an iPhone back camera as characterized by a camera calibration procedure. The virtual camera is used to view a simulated ballistic trajectory and a simulated checkerboard as might be used in an elementary laboratory experiment to calibrate a camera and determine the local acceleration of gravity from video of a ballistic motion. The script explores the sensitivity of the image to camera axis elevation angle. A correction for such sensitivity would be required if the camera direction is not normal to the plane of the motion.
This script may interest students and instructors in physics and other fields who are interested in modeling imaging. It assumes familiarity with geometrical optics. 'Try this' suggestions and coding 'Challenges' are included for further exploration.
