i tried finding out the correlation coefficient between signal and the wavelet function(psi) obtained using command 'wavefun' with the formula
</matlabcentral/answers/uploaded_files/4009/Untitled.png> but its not giving correct energy distribution in frequency bands...is there any other method?

You don't want to use wavefun() in that way. Use the wavelet transform and then analyze the distribution of energy in the wavelet coefficients.
If you want to this with the discrete wavelet transform, I would recommend using the dual-tree transform (introduced in 13b) or the stationary wavelet transform (swt) because those are shift-invariant.
