Hey Nithish,
In order to call a function, you don't need to write "function" in front of it. You can simply call a function with this format:
[variable which will store the value returnded by the function] = [function name]([function parameters])

If you are trying to create a function named update for the purpose of processing callbacks for the slider, then you will need to create the function inside a .m file. The only kind of functions that can be created at the command line are:
  • anonymous functions
  • symbolic functions
  • inline functions
