How to approach the "Model an Ethernet Communication Network with CSMA/CD Protocol"

I am given a task on changing the paramenters and checking the changes in the output from doing the 'Model an Ethernet Communication Network with CSMA/CD Protocol' activity in Matlab.

The problem is I dont have a background on network and simulink.

So far I am studying simulink from the class but having trouble checking what knowledge I need to understand networks that will help me do the activity

Can anyone kindly provide a direction how to go about this?
