Freeman chain code

Dear all, How to generate a freeman chain code representation for a character image can be done . I tried to use Freeman chain code 8-connected representation of a boundary Author.....: Alessandro Mannini. But i get the code as all 0's I don't know why . Please if anyone know please answer me.

Thankyou for the answer. I can understand that .But how should the input to the chain code algorithm be. I had given only the boundary pixel values of the character image .The boundary is continuous .The chain code is not generated .Please help me to generate it.
