I assume you mean via image analysis, and I assume you have an edge-on view but you have not read this yet so there's not much more we can do. About all I can do is to suggest you read that, and post your image and at least explain your algorithm, like you want to use an edge filter, sum the image sideways, and then threshold and find the peaks -- or whatever.
