surfm data disappears when zooming in

Hi, I can plot an image using surfm and plotm on a Mercator map, but after changing the lat/lon by either zooming in or: setm(gca,'maplatlimit',[20 60],'maplonlimit',[-170 -105]) The surfm image disappears, but not the plotm image. The surfm is still there if I plot the image, double click on the surfm image (i.e., the property editor opens), or "reset to original view."

I was getting a entirely black image when I tried printing (or print preview), and the online help suggested updating the video driver, which I successfully did. I believe the black image may have started after a Acrobat update. I don't get the black image anymore, but the peculiar artifact showed up.

I'm using 2011a.
