hi. I only have limited computer programming knowledge in coding an Adobe AIR Flash application. So bearing that in mind I would like to know if MathLab is a good fit for coding a good image thumbnail engine for searching images local to my hard drive and NOT on the web, as well as including a portion for seeking faces out of my entire image database and displaying those in a separate folder. Picasa 3 was a great example of how this would work but Google has discontinued this product and replaced it with Google Photos, which is a web-based only application. I am looking to use or create and compile a desktop client. Thanks in advance.

Doing facial recognition well, recognizing with different angles, and different facial hair, different hats, and so on, is not easy. It would take you a fair bit of research and experimentation to be close to Google's or Apple's success. A couple of years ago, Microsoft launched its facial recognition technology to much publicity, the greater part of which was due to the many failures.
Myself, I would probably purchase a product rather than try to write it myself. Or I would look for freeware. facedetection.com has a useful-looking list of available products.
