How to create a portrait figure?

I want to draw subplots on a portrait figure: 3 rows and 2 columns of square boxes. I can use outerposition to force figure window but the saved figure is rescaled its aspect ratio is not the same as looked on the screen. How to plan and make figures to look the same on the screen and in the saved png, pdf and eps files at the same time?
