How to include tabs in a GUI static text?

I am using:

set(handles.txt_result, 'String', result);

where the result has tabs and changing lines in the form '\t' and '\n' the changing lines work well but not the tabs. I have tried results as char, string, event as sprintf but i can not make it work.

Is handles.txt_result the handle to a uicontrol label? What version of MATLAB are you using? What do you see in place of the tab character? A space? Nothing?
