R2014b fails to save fig file from a very large plot

I tried to save a very large figure but use of the default savefig gives the msg:

However, savefig has no '-v7.3' option by default and I couldn't locate the FigFile.write function. Also, the savefig function wasn't accessible for modification. Help would be appreciated because if I try to export the figure into any of the standard file formats it will lose too much detail and I need to transfer the file to enable exploration on other screens.

I suggest you to use the known function downloadable at https://it.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/23629-export-fig to save figures of any kind.
