Just for clarification below is the question again (d^2 y)/(dx^2 )+4dy/dx+3y=0 subject to initial condition where dy/dx=4 and y=4. Can you help me explain how this can be solved?

Joshua Amuga comments to KSSV:
IVP :=ode({y''(x)+4*y'(x)+3*y,y(0)=3,y'(0)=4},y(x));
Undefined function or variable 'IVP'.

Joshua Amuga: you have attempted to use MuPAD syntax in MATLAB. You need to command
nb
and then use the command in the MuPAD notebook that opens.

dsolve() or one of the ode* routines.

You are attempting to use MuPAD syntax in MATLAB. The solution you posted of
dsolve('D2y-4*Dy+3*y','y(0)=3','Dy(0)=4')
appears to me to be valid.
