Which image is fed into the feature extraction step in medical image processing?

Respected Sir,

After segmentation, the resulted image is either in the form of Grayscale or binary image.

What type of image (ie., Grayscale or Binnary) is taken in the next step ie., feature extraction process?

Our segmented image is medical image such as leukemia, mammogram, etc.,
