hamming and rectangular window

i'm very new to this and just looking for some help. when i try the hamming and rectangular window in matlab, this comes up. can someone explain to me the differences between the rectangular window and the hamming. why is the rectangular window just a line in the time domain but the hamming window is a curve? what is better about the hamming window?
