'referenced model not connected to external simulation' in Simulink real time

I'm using a model that contains a referenced model included from a git submodule.

I'm trying to build the model with simulink real time and access parameters with the External mode.

Signals entering the referenced model don't exit the model and I can't see signals in the referenced model.(All signals are 0 on displays)

Even signals initialised in the referenced model don't exit the referenced model and get shown as 0 outside of the referenced model.

When entering the referenced model in External mode I can see the warning 'referenced model not connected to external simulation' in the bottom left corner.

How can I fix this issue?

It is impossible to enter External Mode for referenced models. If you want to monitor or log signals, you need to bring them out of the referenced model as a signal Outport. This can be a bus for your convenience. If you want to change parameters inside the referenced model, you can create a Simulink Parameter and check the 'Argument' option. The parameter is now adaptable from outside of the referenced model with for example set_param.

Thank you for your answer.

However, currently all signals from the referenced model just get lost, no matter if they are initialized inside the model or just passed through.

The value for all signals coming out of the model is 0, even if they get initialized wih a different value inside the model.
