Invisible figures make MATLAB unresponsive

I have a program that works with figures with visibility set to off. That works fine, but if I pause the program with a breakpoint, MATLAB is very slow an nearly unresponsive until I make the figures visible again by calling "figure(1)", etc. Any way to fix this issue?
Mac OSX 10.6.7, Intel core 2 duo
