Closest point on a 3D plot to current mouse coordinates

I have a 3D-curve plotted in a matlab figure window (I have X,Y,Z coordinates of points on the 3D curve). I am trying to get matlab to determine the closest data point, on that line, in relation to whereever my mouse is located on the screen. The end goal is to get matlab to rotate the figure, with my mouse, about the point on this 3D curve that I'm currently looking at in the matlab figure window. The way it seems to work now is that matlab will rotate the figure about a point on the viewing plane of the figure. Thanks for your help.
