Is it correct to give a Visual Studio directory name for SDK 7.1 ? Does the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0 exist?

Yes thats correct (assuming a default installation of SDK 7.1). If mex can find it you will see this:

Your environment variable VS100COMNTOOLS isn't set up. This should normally points to an installation subfolder of your Visual Studio 10 installation folder (normally automatically created when installing SDK 7.1),e .g.

VS100COMNTOOLS=C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\Tools\

Since this environment variable doesn't exist on your machine, MATLAB is not able to find a correctly installed SDK 7.1.

In addition it seems like you haven't installed the .NET framework (correctly) because the mt.exe is missing from you system. This file should normally be in (assuming default installation folder) C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\bin\mt.exe.

Windows 8 behaves sometimes a bit bitchy when it comes to the installtion of the SDK 7.1. The first step mentioned in the first answer here is worth a shot.

You selected the wrong location of the SDK 7.1. The folder MATLAB found is correct: " [1] Microsoft Software Development Kit (SDK) 7.1 in c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0 ". Let mex -setup locate the SDK 7.1 automatically and go with the location it suggests. Microsoft installs the 32bit and the 64bit components in c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0 which might seem a bit strange.

My concern with the compiler is because I'm desperately trying to make work the EmotivEEG tool box from the file exchange.
