Usually you connect it to a serial port and talk to its UART. That might or might not be with the intermediate step of a USB/serial convertor. USB/serial has challenges, but sometimes it is the only game in town.

Can I know in what aspect that you mean USB/serial has challenges? Because I'm using USB to RS232 converter to communicate between PIC and matlab gui, it cannot work. May I know what should I pay attention? Well, further more it always make my matlab program hang. Thank you.
