Is there a keyboard shortcut for deleting one character ahead of the cursor, instead of one character behind it (backspace)? Back in the days when I was using xemacs for my Matlab editor, I could do this with Ctrl+D. If it exists in Matalb, what is it's "action name" within the keyboard shortcuts preference editor, so that I might customize it?

Do you not have the extended keyboard with the navigation pad and the numeric keypad? Does your keyboard not have a delete key?

For some reason, Apple keyboards don't have a delete key. Or actually what they called delete was actually a backspace key. I always hated that about them. So what I did was to get a Logitech keyboard (for my wife's Mac) that had both a backspace key (delete to the left of the cursor) and delete key (delete to the right of the cursor). Problem solved.

My Apple keyboard does have a delete key. It is a German keyboard and the key is marked as "Entf".
The compact keyboard without a number block use Fn-Delete (which is the "Backspace"-key...) or control-D.
