I was working on a MATLAB routine which I had saved a few times as I updated it.
Now, for some reason, I am in a state where my "save" icon seems to have disappeared.
I am fearful of just axing the contents of the editor window and losing all the latest updates I have
done. How do I recover from this? Image attached showing the current state.

Click the More link at the top of the page, in the bar whose left-most element is "MATLAB Central" with a downward facing triangle. That brings up several resources, of which the Help link is the most relevant for your question.
In this case, Voss moved / changed your answer "Yep, that was it! Thanks!" into a comment. By general convention items posted as answers should either be a suggestion for how to resolve the question that was asked or something that will lead to such a suggestion. Expression of thanks (which are not actually a solution) should be posted as a comment instead by convention.
The MATLAB Central developers recently introduced the functionality for users with sufficient reputation points (2000, some Level 6 users and all users Level 7 and above) to move comments to become answers or vice versa to help encourage that convention and it's that functionality Voss used.
