Try this:

format short g
x = 1.025280000000000e+04
y = -2.95397040162016e-12

x =
        10253

y =
   -2.954e-12

At some point, format defaults to exponential notation, regardless.

You're going to have like more than 20 decimal places. I think that once you get so small or so large, it doesn't do it, but I think there is a File Exchange routine that can do it - I just don't remember the name.
