I need to draw a line into a video feed that i can use to count the amount of people that cross that line. I can see its very simple to do this with an image but struggling slightly with a video.

Can't you just call the line() function? How are you showing the video? Is it a live stream from a camera, or a replay from a stored video file, like an .avi, .mpg, .mp4 or whatever? Or are you calling implay() or movie()?

So I’m using a video clip (.avi) Would the line() function allow me to check when something happens over the line? Also I need the line in specific areas can that function be placed by the user?

Unless you are using preview(), handling movies always comes down to somehow capturing a frame of the movie into an array and then processing the array the same way that you would process an array that had been created by imread() of an image.
If you want to examine the data along a line in an array, you can use improfile, passing in the coordinates of the endpoints of the line.
