Bharat Electronics Develops Signal Processor and Extractor for 3D Radar Surveillance
“High-volume radar data from multiple beams is a major challenge to analyze. With the help of MATLAB, we were able to read this data and arrange it in the form of a radar data cube.”
Key Outcomes
- Achieved over 95% accuracy with reduced cycle time, using visualization tools that enabled rapid prototyping
- Radar Toolbox and Phased Array System Toolbox supported the design process through multiple development stages
- Algorithm development, validation, and testing tools in MATLAB created an ideal testbench environment to streamline future projects
Bharat Electronics is a leading force in developing radar systems, including 3D surveillance radars. Signal processor and extractor modules in these radars find target signals in environmental noise, but their workflow can create high algorithmic complexity. Radars also face challenges from hardware obsolescence, which makes upgrading them require time and resources.
Bharat Electronics used Phased Array System Toolbox™ and Radar Toolbox to develop algorithms to model these modules and validate site-recorded data from the radar. The team also validated and realized a signal extractor in MATLAB® using visualization tools, such as Doppler filtering and data cubes for high-volume data, as well as synthetic data.
These tools allowed the radar to maintain high fidelity without requiring a large time commitment. After 24 validation scans, the team found that the results of the simulated radar matched the real-world data very closely, making the model an ideal testbench for future prototyping and development.
