University of Michigan Helps Students Acquire Model-Based Systems Engineering Experience

      Sophia Papp, University of Michigan

University of Michigan’s MBSE program uses MATLAB and Simulink tools to prepare students for aerospace engineering careers.

In our MBSC lab, MathWorks tools enables students to take on really complex problems in a way that is tangible and really informative to them. Problems such as controls engineering, which is the first time that many students have ever worked with this type of discipline. Can be very daunting.

But with something like Simulink, students have a visual tool that is easy to understand and they can work their way through it. They can problem solve. They can work together. There's excessive documentation that is very helpful for them. So having a tool like this is really essential to their learning.

And students also use it as part of their project team to verify their systems. They use it when they're running experiments to analyze data using their statistical tools. And I know students use it for a variety of reasons, such as little simulations and just any program they need. It's easiest done in Matlab.

My favorite part of being part of the MBSE lab so far has been teaching laboratory content to students. I really like getting the chance to interact with them, to watch them learn something new, and to hopefully be giving them the tools they need to succeed as aerospace engineers, as future systems engineers.

So that is my favorite part. And I love getting to teach MathWorks tools, because I know that they have been essential to my education, such as MATLAB and Simulink. So I hope that students also gain a lot from that.

I'm really excited to continue integrating MathWorks into our curriculum, because I think they're valuable tools that students will definitely be using throughout their careers, throughout the rest of their education, and it really makes this class applicable to the real world. These are tools they are learning to use that will follow them for the rest of their life.
